0 Episode 47 – “The Internet”, circa 1998, and Cat Grandpa!
We broke from tradition this week and removed the guest futon from the studio set up to see if we could find a better way to place our guests. Sure, we just changed to a few spare kitchen chairs, but we also covered them in fuzzy blankets so that it’d seem like they were lined with Muppet fur … which, as I write it, sounds a lot more horrifying than I had intended.
BUT we had a great time, despite the seating switcheroo, with Jake and Matt this week. Between the four of us, we worked with a vast collection of pop culture knowledge and happenstance experience to give us some great, and RANDOM conversations throughout the evening.
You’ll definitely catch this during the episode, which’ll be available tomorrow, but you can get your fix now by listening to this week’s Mic Check! The conversation started out discussing previous incarnations of, and memories linked to, AOL, and old-timey Internet, but, then it began to meander, as it does. Definitely keep an ear open for Cat Grandpa as you listen!
Here’s a link to the episode page so you can check back when the episode is released tomorrow!
0 Episode 46 – How many Whelans does it take to …
OK, so I don’t really have a follow up for that headline, but it was an awesome show this week, as we had Wheels return for another appearance on the guest futon, but, in tow, he brought my sister Gooey with, to expose her to as much streaming media as he could.
And we three Whelans had fun hanging out with Adam in the Frank Oz Memorial Studio, and our conversations, as per usual, wandered all over the place. But for now, the MIC CHECK is available on the EPISODE PAGE.
In all actuality, I’ve already posted the episode itself, anticipating a busy Friday in the office and/or early escape to the Irish Fair in St. Paul, MN, but we’ll see who reads this far into the post before investigating the episode page.
Make sure to check out this week’s mic check, plus the episode, and we’ll see you next week for episode Forty Seven!
0 Episode 45 – Sorry I’m Late!
Right. So … sorry I’m late. I was on a business trip from Thursday until today, and my hotel had less than 1 Mbps Wi-Fi, so I didn’t have a good enough connection to successfully get everything on the site.
But … on the bright side, now you get everything at once! Now the episode is available (and should be available on iTunes and Stitcher shortly), plus both bonus tracks! You can check everything out by clicking here.
We had a fantastic time during this week’s episode, with two veterans on site to perpetuate the conversation in any direction we wanted to take it. It was really nice. In terms of priorities, you should definitely start with the Episode, then the Mic Check, then the Post-Episode bonus track. Do them in that order.
While you do that, I’m going to go finish unpacking my car so I can get access to the Spotted Cow I just picked up for the studio (we can call that an incentive to get our future guests riled up).
0 Episode 44 – Eternal Sunshine of the Guessless Build a Title
So it was another hot night in the Frank Oz Memorial Studio, much like this entire bizarre Midwest summer. So we took a stab at running a round of Build a Title around, but there was a bit of a struggle. THAT, and we started with a tough lead in. Try to guess what it is … hmmm … I wonder.
But yeah. Check out this week’s bonus Build a Title game, and make sure to listen to the full episode and Mic Checks if you haven’t already!
0 Episode 44 – We’re all kids on the inside …
Adam and I had a great show this week, featuring his sister, Kia Hammill, and returning guest Dave Wheeler. The four of us had a nice time, despite the lingering heat that evening.
We chatted about some recent news, including Netflix’s returns, a new Redbox product coming soon, and a new Internet video series being featured on Crackle.
So all that stuff comes out tomorrow in the full episode, but now you can listen to the Mic Check! You can find it on this week’s episode page. We talk about TOYS! Well … TOYS and hobbies and things like that from our collective childhoods. A great time is had by all.
Go team.
0 Episode 43 – For your listening pleasure …
So this week we had an excellent episode, BUT we also had one of our BEST post episode conversation bonus tracks in the history of “Buffering …”.
I’m going to leave it at that, and say you should definitely check it out.
0 Episode 43 – A Podcast Divided
Wanted to start off by saying, no, this is not a negative Mic Check week. Well … it is, but it’s moreso Dan, Adam, and guests Jenn and Curtis, dealing with crazy dreams and bad luck. So they hate stuff, or their brains hate them, but either way, two talk about one topic, while the others go with door number two.
Well, that’s spelled out enough. Otherwise, we had a great show this week. You definitely need to stop back on Saturday to check out the Post Episode Conversation track. It’s just about an hour in itself, but it totally could have been a part of the episode, if you wanted to struggle through two hours. I mean … you wouldn’t struggle since you love the show, right? I’m just worried about your phone’s battery … or something.
So head on over to the page for Episode 43, and check out this week’s Mic Check.
0 Episode 42 – Never getting up again
It’s true. The band Chumbawamba is no more. The group officially split this week, reminding everyone once more of a simpler time where we learned that, if you get knocked down, you should get back up again, and nothing can keep you down. Makes sense coming from self-proclaimed anarchists. But I digress.
Adam and I had a great time this week with returning guests Emily Dyess and Andrew Nelson, where we broke this news to everyone. No more new Chumbawamba singles. To bridge that to a Mic Check, I had everyone talk about their favorite words, based on their phonetics. But that’s not all, right Billy Mays?
That’s right. Before we got the Mic Check under way, we also had a great pre-episode conversation where we just let the recording program run as we discussed a mess of stuff, including the acquisition of Nerdist Industries by Legendary Entertainment, and the new rules that will be included in the new versions of Scrabble that will be released soon. As a part of the Nerdist discussion, I also introduced everyone to “Chris Hardwick’s All-Star Celebrity Bowling”, which is available on YouTube (and there’s a link on the episode page).
0 Episode 40 – Prom Groups & “Battle of the Planets”
Happy Thursday everyone!
If you have not yet heard, the Supreme Court has upheld Obama’s health care law. I’m not going anywhere with this, but I thought you might like to stay informed. You can read about it here.
ANYWAY, here in Minneapolis, Adam and I had one fantastic time this week with our guests, Joel and Julia. We hadn’t seen the likes of Julia since my birthday shenanigans on Nicollet Mall, and we always enjoy having Joel around.
For this week’s mic checks, I mentioned that a great deal of “Reading Rainbow” episodes are now available on YouTube in full, which you can find here, and, from there segwayed into discussing what our favorite childhood TV shows are. It was a really open ended question, but it also created a fun discussion, since everyone had at least one show on their list that everyone else liked, or at least recognized.
You can listen to the new Mic Checks by visiting the episode page for this week. CLICK HERE to check it out!
0 Episode 39 – With [some] apologies to Jason Mraz’s hat
Adam and I had a great (but hot) week this week. No, no trips to the brothels of Minneapolis this week. It was just really freakin’ hot out, which means its really freakin’ hot in the Frank Oz Memorial Studio as well.
Originally, we did have another guest slated to join James Wheeler this week, but due to last minute schedule conflicts, Guest Coordination Producer Caity Shea Robertson jumped in to save the day! The four of us started off the show slow with a fairly chill Mic Check, while everyone got used to the heat, but it made for a great Mic Check none the less. Make sure to check it out, as you’ll learn about some great work being done through the University of Minnesota (and James Wheeler), as well as everyone’s favorite volunteering experiences.
You know … it’s still really hot in the Frank Oz Memorial Studio, so I’m gonna go cool off by the tower fan. Make sure to check out this week’s Mic Check, and stay tuned tomorrow for the NEW EPISODE!
